Surrogate Motherhood Program. Medical Data

     The IVF procedure (i.e. in-vitro fertilization method) may be applied to a married couple for whom it appears impossible to conceive a baby without help of medicine. In the course of implementation of the surrogate motherhood program the genetic mother is prescribed stimulating pills and injections, which contribute to the process of generation and growth of several ova in the ovaries.

     If necessary, medical preparations may also be prescribed to the would-be surrogate mother for the purpose of synchronization of her menstrual cycle with that of the genetic mother. Subsequently, the genetic mother's ovum that has been obtained will be fertilized with spermatozoa of her husband outside the body of the genetic mother. Apart from the conventional in-vitro fertilization method, the ICSI (Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection) method is applied. According to this method, the most viable spermatozoon is sampled and injected into the ovum with the aid of special tools. Upon fertilization of the ovum with the spermatozoon the embryo has to be held for three days in a special incubator.

     Then the embryo or embryos that have been grown in the incubator will be transferred into the body of the surrogate mother where they will continue to evolve. In this case, with this method applied, the fetal development is as natural as under the normal conception conditions. The chances of the onset of pregnancy are comparable in this case with the conditions under which similar techniques are applied without surrogacy services and are rather high. The medical care to be taken of pregnant surrogate mothers is similar to that of any pregnant woman. Although, surrogate mothers may be in need of   additional medical advice and psychological support.
